"Teachers make a goddamn difference!Now what about you?" Taylor Mali is passionate about how you can't judge someone by how much they make in his poem "What Teachers Make". "Those who can do, do; and those who can't, teach." is a bold statement by a dinner guest at Taylor Mali's house who continues "I mean, you’re a teacher, Taylor. Be honest. What do you make?"  Taylor responds with an aggressive answer that no one expecting. "And I wish he hadn’t done that— asked me to be honest-- because, you see, I have this policy about honesty and ass-­‐kicking: if you ask for it, then I have to let you have it." Taylor goes on about how makes children work with their best abilities, how he makes them make no mistakes, and how he makes them use their brains so that they can follow their hearts. The point of this poem is to never judge someone by how much they make. He uses humor to catch your attention and get the message across.


"Hip Hop" by Beau Sia is a very important poem to society these days. Hip Hop is one of the most popular music industries but how is it going downhill? Racial slurs got out of hand. ""Damn, she’s fly/high, with chinky eyes" and "Chinky-eyed Korean/ spy and if I’ll buy.” I don’t understand the words.Why don’t you teach me? Is there a word for the eyes of Puerto Ricans?" "Yo, is it cool now to use racial slurs to talk about someone’s physical features? Like is that what’s hip? Are there rock songs about n-word asses? Country songs about w-back hair? Pop songs about a woman’s rhymes-with-bike nose? I wanna know!" It's not okay to call someone a rude word just because of their appearance. They are the same human being you are but just with different features. This is a quite powerful poem.

Rachel is a star. She shines brighter than your future will ever be. She is the person you will always wish you ended up being. All the dreams you have ever dreamed, Rachel has accomplished. She has climbed to the highest heights, and the lowest lows. There is no understanding Rachel. If she were to list all of her success it would take 376 years. Rachel has been on every square inch of the world and almost finished walking all of Mars. Rachel single-handedly built the Eiffel tower, Mount Rushmore, the Stone Henge and Yellow Stone National Park. Rachel is like the wind; she is always there but you can never see her. She has won every professional sport cup, every Nobel Prize, every contest, and has a diploma in every subject. Rachel invented everything you use today, from the screen you're reading this on, to the simple light bulb on your ceiling. Rachel goes out to help in the soup kitchen every week, it takes her mind off of being the most amazing person in the world and makes her think of helping others. On the weekends Rachel goes out to the rink to play hockey, no one is able to score on her but once in a while she'll let one or two goals in just to make the other team feel like they have a chance. Rachel is the person you'll always wish you were and maybe if you're lucky one day, you'll feel her brush by her shoulder.
